Mastering Assessment Writing Without Having to Learn the Hard Way

Updated: 13 minutes ago

I remember the first time I was asked to do a foster care assessment. It honestly felt like I was wading through wet cement. I can only imagine how it was experienced by the potential carer as my eyes glazed over when trying to listen at the same time as thinking; what do I ask next, what criteria can I hang these words on, and how will find the time to write this up.

Fifteen odd years on,  much more practice and some humility, I have learned to do better.

I have learned how to balance the questioning, the importance of respecting the stories and revealing the vulnerabilities. I have learned how to navigate difficult conversations, to challenge and sometimes confront. I know now how to triangulate the evidence to ensure I am confident of my recommendations.  All of this, to ensure kids who may not even have been thought of yet, are cared for by people who will protect and honour them and their families.

Assessment writing is an art form, it’s a challenge, and it takes skill and practice.  What a difference having access to this Assessment Writing Workshop would have made all those years ago.

If you or your team would like to hone your assessment skills, please get in touch. Our next course is online in April and we have a range of face-to-face and online options available throughout the year. Visit our live training page for more information.

By the way, as an added bonus, it’s highly likely the trainer could be me!
