With Tropical Cyclone Alfred approaching, we want to take a moment to acknowledge the dedicated professionals, carers, volunteers, and families who will be on the frontlines, providing care and support to children and young people throughout this challenging time.
We’re also grateful to PeakCare for sharing important resources that have helped us prepare and ensure we’re sharing the best information with our community. Staying informed is crucial, and we encourage everyone to check out these trusted sources for the latest updates:
Supporting Children Through Cyclones
Natural disasters can be overwhelming for children, but there are fantastic resources available to help them feel supported and prepared.
For families, especially those with children who have experienced past trauma, we offer a free resource to help them navigate natural disasters. 'How It Affects Me?', a module from our Trauma and Disaster Recovery (TDR) series, is designed specifically for children and narrated by young people. It explains natural disasters in a way that kids can relate to while providing practical coping strategies to help manage their emotions during and after these events. In under 30 minutes, your child can learn from young South East Queenslanders, like Jeremiah and Hannah, who share their experiences of the 2022 floods and COVID-19. They’ll hear about how they felt, how they supported each other, and what they needed from adults to feel safe.
